I was a kid in the 1950's, and I remember riding all over the countryside to little town cemetaries with my parents on "Decoration Day" putting flowers on the family graves, especially the veterans. In my father's little home town, we used to watch the veterans from WWI and WWII march by in their uniforms...and the parade always ended at the cemetary where the soldiers played "taps" and fired three rounds of bullets over the graves... and we kids always scrambled to grab the spent shells.
