Memorial Day Weekend 2017: The Unsung Heroes of Vietnam

We buried my brother on Friday - the first day of Memorial Day Weekend 2017.

Melvin Eugene Purscell was an unsung Vietnam War hero, whose life was cut short by Agent Orange.

He was a mechanic at John Deere in Des Moines, Iowa for many years, and later drove truck locally and over-the-road. He loved his dogs, and whole-hog barbecue cooking. He enjoyed many years of motorcycle riding, as well as many years of custom motorcycle and stock-car building and racing.

Born on Nov. 6,
1951, he was the son of Joseph and Luella Purscell. In his younger days he rose to 4th in state, racing a Suzuki motocross bike. He built his first hobby stock race car in his 40’s and was a frequent racer at the Iowa Fairgrounds. His motocross and hobby-stock racing number was 58.

Mr. Purscell was an excellent motorcycle mechanic as well as an excellent welder; both talents put to use in the restoration of a 1933 Indian Scout motorcycle that had been pulled from the ditch of an Iowa farmer. The restored bike took first place in a state competition at the old Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines.

He road and maintained a 1956 Harley Panhead, which he has passed down to his son and grandsons. He is survived by his wife, Carol, as well as, his mother, who lives in Florida, his sister, Mary Jo Pezzi and brother, Richard Purscell of Florida; and four older half-brothers: Jim Purscell of Arkansas; Wayne, Jerry and Larry Purscell all of Des Moines.

His four children and spouses include Joe and Krys Purscell of Waukee; Julie and Sean Gilkey of West Des Moines; Karen Purscell and Christina Purscell of Des Moines. He had 12 grandchildren, and has his first great grandchild on the way.
Mel's son, Joe Purscell received the shells from
a 21-gun salute. He also took his last journey
in a motorcycle iron hearse, and received
a full color-guard burial in Winterset, Iowa.

He joined the Army and fought in Vietnam at age 19. He drove “The Mighty Mini” and other portable missile-launching trucks. That is where he acquired a strong faith in God that continued over the years. He passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family on May 23, 2017. He was 65.

3rd Annual Aidan's Ride from Indian Larry Motorcycles in Brooklyn

Thank You #Aidanhasapossee (link to pictures)

The 3rd Annual Aidan's Ride out of Indian Larry Motorcycles was June 11th.

Because of unpredictable weather, it was kickstands up at 11 am for a ride around Brooklyn with the after party at the Indian Larry Motorcycles showroom and garage.

The ride was to the BQE to the Belt Parkway to the Cross Island to the Whitestone Expressway to Grand Central to the BQE and back to the shop 70 N 15th street, Brooklyn NY 11222.

The ride was hosted by Bobby and Elisa Seeger, owners of Indian Larry Motorcycles to raise funds to help children and families battling ALD - Adrenoleukodystrophy, a childhood disease that can be treated if it is diagnosed at birth.
Their son, Aidan was a fighter in life, loved motorcycles and had a posse of friends cheering for him when he was diagnosed with ALD at age six in 2011. He lost the battle in 2012. The Aidan Jack Seeger Foundation was established in his honor to help families, to raise awareness of the disease and to press for legislation to require newborn screening for ALD.

Trump Spoke at 29th Rolling Thunder Demonstration Run

5/29/2016 -- Hundreds of thousands of bikers assembled at the Pentagon before riding en masse through Washington D.C. to the Lincoln Memorial, where Donald J. Trump was a guest speaker at the 29th annual Rolling Thunder veteran's motorcycle run.

Rolling Thunder Riders from as far away as California and Texas, cross the heartlands of America together for the annual "Freedom Ride" through Washington D.C., coming together for the biggest one-day rally in the USA. This year marks 29 years. - Video - MSgt Rob Wilkins, USAF, Ret.

The first Rolling Thunder run, in 1987 was made in an attempt to petition the government to take responsibility for the soldiers that were abandoned after the Vietnam War ended. Four Vietnam veterans, exercising their First Amendment "right to petition and assemble," organized a group of 2,500 veterans on motorcycles to ride through the streets of Washington D.C. to bring awareness of the plight of prisoners of war (POW) and those missing in action (MIA.)

Today, more than 500,000 riders participate in the Freedom Ride and as many as 900,000 people line the streets to welcome them to the nation's capitol.

Nancy Regg, a spokeswoman for Rolling Thunder, said the group invited Mr. Trump to appear. The group did not extend an invitation to Hillary Clinton or Senator Bernie Sanders, she told the New York Times.

Richard McFadden, 58, an annual Rolling Thunder attendee from North Carolina, said Mrs. Clinton would not have been welcome. Read more.
